PEOPLE OF BANANA ISLAND

Banana Island is located near Long Bien Bridge in Hanoi, Vietnam. As people increasingly seek a sense of freedom, various alternative lifestyles have emerged as a backlash against capitalism and consumerism, which can sometimes reach overwhelming levels. This story is about a community that has found happiness and peace simply by rejecting individualism and certain social conventions. I call them the “People of Banana Island.”

They leave their doors wide open to everyone looking for freedom and say: “We share our food, swim in the same river regardless of how dirty it is. We create our own freedom by taking off our clothes and ignoring all the labels.” Once considered a hellish place, Banana Island is now home to a small group of people who live freely and reject conventional social norms.

While crossing the Red River, you will see short stairways leading through small areas in the middle of the river. Once you walk down the steps, you will come across a narrow path through banana trees and find yourself mesmerised as you enter the island. “Banana Island,” along the Red River, is a “home” for a community that stands for freedom and togetherness, without any age limit. Therefore, a 96-year-old man carrying emotional wounds from the Vietnam War is just as welcome as a 20-year-old DJ.

On this island, located only 1.5 km from the Old Quarter, people swim without a dress code, exercise in nature, eat and spend time together, and live apart from conventional social norms, merging their sense of freedom with nudity. Living naked on a daily basis can be understood as a rejection of many of the conventions accumulated throughout the history of civilisation. In fact, looking into the eyes of the people on the island, it seems as though their search for infinite happiness has led them back to the very beginning-to Homo sapiens.
